I have the exact same Issue, When I got my headphones they came with firmware 2.0? The actual problem began after I updated mine to 4.1.1 The drop in performance for me went from not being able to hear a big 3.0 liter diesel engine while driving my van to now I can hear people making conversation which I couldn't hear when I got my headphones out of the box.

This is an incredibly shambolic failure of the product. There is a thread about the firmware 4.1.1 and mine kicked the kerb after I upgraded and it appears Sony dont believe that there is an issue.
