I am taking it the A390 doesn't have the AE-L i've looked for it in the manual & nothing has been mentioned does anyone know how to lock the exposure apart from holding the shutter halfway down to lock the exposure on the A390?

Put the values in yourself

Point the camera at what you want to expose for, note the ISO, aperture and shutter settings. Switch to manual and enter the values. Take the shot. Doesn't help for quickly shooting something, put if you are using AEL then you will not usually be quickly shooting something anyway!
