Hello guys,
Can anybody suggest how I can upgrade the memory of my VAIO B1XP to 1GB. As far as I know the laptop has 512MB installed non-removable memory inside and it is provided with one extention slot, which takes memory modules of up to 512MB. The memory modules type is SO-DIMM PC2700 DDR333.
I went to the local Sony represenatives and they told me that it will cost me about 230EU, while I see that similar memories are sold for about 70EU! Are there any key features of the Sony's SODIMMs that make all them 4 times more expensive? Can I use non-Sony's memory without doubts? Can I put that memory module myself, where does it reside? The only screwed cover I see is the one for the hard drive, is the memory slot also there?

Hi Vankata,

The empty expansion slot is beneath the keyboard; have a look here for a guide on accessing this.

Have a look at the Crucial site for memory, it is very competitively priced and excellent quality, and although Sony claim that 1024 Mb is the max RAM for your model they say that you can go to 1536 Mb, but check this out with the Crucial System Scanner.

If you ever need to send your computer to Sony for repairs make sure that you first remove the additional non-Sony RAM, apart from that you should have no problems.

Thank you very much, Rich!
It's great if I can go up to 1.5GB RAM! However, did anyone try doing that or you say if 'CRUCIAL' claims, it is ok. Aren't there any consumption violations with the 1GB DIMM? Is it safe enough?
Ivan
