Having had my Vaio for about 2 months and not being able to create my recovery disc on DVD-R, I thought there must be a problem with the disk cake I had purchased (after all I tried 7 of them).

I was just about to buy some more, when I read this thread! My drive - Sony DVD RW DW-D56A - appears to be one of the bad ones. Like other subscribers, I too can't understand why Sony are still selling VAIO's with dodgy drives! I thought I had bought one of the best, but compared with my previous £500 from Dixons, it's crap!

Does anyone know if this is a hardware or firmware issue? Any idea's?

Hi

Welcome to the Forum.

I'm afraid it appears to be hardware based. As your machine is under warranty get it back to Sony.

There are firmware updates available at Vaio-Link but I'm not entirely sure what it is they are supposed to update as users are still having problems following the update.

Thanks guys; and what a welcome to the club! I like most people have tried the updates but to no avail:smileycry:

Like someone said in the threads Sony have a very poor QA and are somewhat left wanting with their honesty and reaction to this obviously massive problem!

Just think if it was a problem with a Ford car. It would immediately be recalled! Obviously the Japanese are not as honourable as they maintain (sorry to any Japanese non Sony Executives - your not included)!

Jimmex, I read your thread but dare not take the risk, most things I touch like that, I tend to make worse, So it looks like I have to settle for 10 days of no Laptop.

Shame we can't charge for our wasted time - unless there are any Lawyers out there who know different!:smileydevil:

You can ask for compensation if the repairs aren't conducted within a reasonable amount of time to a decent standard, or not completely fixed first time.
