pcg-fr315b processor upgade

: I would like to upgrade the processor in my laptop, it currently has a celeron 2.6 installed, can i upgrade to a pentium 4 and if so which processors will fit, does it have to be a special mobile processor?
I believe the celeron fitted in this laptop is a desktop cpu, if i can change it to a mobile P4 will i have to change the cpu voltage, is this even possible. Any help or links to sites that can help with this would be appreciated.
I've upgraded/built many desktop puters so i'm not a total noob but I need some advice before I take a screwdriver to my precious laptop.

You'd have to stick with Celeron, as they're not the same class of CPU

I dont understand, my celeron is socket 478 and pentium processors come in socket 478 and lga775, surely if i match the bus speed I can swap to a socket 478 P4.

On your Laptop is an Celeron 2,6GHz with 100Mhz Front Side Bus(QDR)
installed.(Northwood) "Desktop-CPU"

I have a PCG315S with an Pentium 4 with 2,667GHz and 133MHz
Front Side Bus (QDR). (Northwood) "Desktop-CPU"

I would change the Celeron with the Pentium4 (look at my VAIO)

You "can't" change the Celeron with a Pentium 4 mobile.

Problems:

I wouldn't go higher than 2,667 GHz(look at your temperature)
[the PCG-FR415s have 2,8GHz, but it's your risk]

Look at your Motherboard!
(the Pentium 4 has 133MHz Front Side Bus(QDR) your Celeron only 100!)

I don't know the max. Front Side Bus from your Motherbord.

Why to change the Celeron with an Pentium 4?

Your Celeron have a 128kb Level 2 Cache, the Pentium 4 (Northwood) have 512 kb.

Higher the Level2 Cache and the system works faster.

Ok i see the probs now. I will have to check to see if the motherboard supports a different bus speed and also if it does i'll need to check if i need to change the multiplier if its by hardware or bios and if this can be changed also.

Heat may be a problem if I use a desktop cpu and battery life so 'why' can't i use a mobile P4 in this laptop, whats the difference ie. pins, bus, what?

Kee-Lo just saying its a different class of cpu doesn't really amswer my question, P4 mobile not pentium M. Whats the difference with a P4 and P4 mobile. Sony must have had P4 mobile laptops before the new class of Pentium M processors existed, and if a P4 and a P4 mobile is socket 478 why do you say I cant fit one, whats the difference. ie. is it bus speed voltage what?

That's correct.

The mobile P4 (not the Centrino) use Speedstep technology.
Your Motherboard use this (I don't know)?

When a Notebook (with mobile P4) works only with batterypower
goes the CPU-Kernel voltage and the GHz down.

(example: from 2,4GHz down to 800MHz)(1,5V down to 1,3V)

Your Motherboard use this (I don't know)?

And the price different between the P4 and the mobile P4..

example:

In Germany a P4(Northwood) with 3,06GHz cost approx 200¿.
The mobile P4(Northwood, 3,06GHz) cost approx 220¿.
The P4(Northwood, 2,8GHz) cost approx 130¿

And the P4 M(Centrino, Dothan) using a other base(479).

(the CPU Clock from P4 2667MHz is 20, the think the Clock from your
Celeron is 26!)

(my P4 with Clockspeed 26 has 3458MHz, that's not a good idea).

But I think you must don't change the Clock speed on the Bios.
The Clock speed is sitting strong on the CPU

Thx seb21 youv'e been a big help, I know that mobile processors are not multiplier locked so that they can run slower when not at full use unlike desktop cpu's. Since Sony dont give you motherboard information in their manual I guess I'm just goin to have to open the case and try it

You must don't open the case!
Look at the Internet for tools.

But I would not only change the CPU, better you change the RAM
(upgrate to 1GB)

Look at the manufacturer from the RAM in your Notebook (use EVEREST or Sandra) and use this to upgrate.

Changing the RAM is no problem(look at the compatiblity)
Changing the CPU, I don't know?

I've heard someone say they sucessfully upgraded the FR315B to the Intel (R) Core 2 Duo processor without any problems. It apparently has the same pin interface.

I'm looking to upgrade my FR31 myself, as I really love this laptop and Sony laptop these days seem to fall apart. They don't make them like they used to 😞

Also if your laptop is running slow, and you have 1GB of Ram installed Windows 7 runs suprisingly well on the machine, faster than Windows XP suprisingly. I love XP but Windows 7 (32-bit) runs really well on the old vaio.

PS: Are you saying that the Vaio PCG-FR315B uses a desktop processor rather than a laptop one?
