A long shot here . . . . are you using the 'safely remove hardware' option before removing the floppy drive and are you sure that the drive is hot swappable?

"Hot swapable" means that you can take out the device in question, and plug it in again. If it has a flat rectangular socket and USB on it then it is hot-swapable.

You should be able to unplug the hot-swapable device and reconnect it without restarting or shutting down your VAIO first.

You should always use the safely remove hardware applet before pulling out USB cables imho.

Forgot about that! :smileyblush:

You can disable the Safely Remove Hardware applet, but I wouldn't recommend it (especially if like me, you use a USB Mass Storage Device)!

To remove a Hot-Swapable device with the Safely Remove Hardware icon:

1. Right click the grey, green safely remove hardware icon.
2. Click Safetly Remove Hardware.
3. Click the STOP button.
4. Wait until a ballon appears telling you it is now safe to disconnect the hardware.
5. Close the dialog box.
6. Pull the plug out of the USB socket.
7. The balloon disappears.

I never suggested you should! Keep the applet - its quite vital especially to USB and PCMCIA devices - you could lose data if you remove it from the taskbar for good!

You mean a multi-purpose bay - now I'm with you!

BTW thanks for locating the manual online - it is an excellent way for others to help you.

Have you tried swapping the primary battery with the new second battery in these slots (i.e. putting a fully charged secondary (new) battery in the primary battery slot, and then putting the original battery in the multi-purpose slot) and starting the computer from cold? Try also starting the computer from your fully charged new second battery firstly in the primary battery bay, and then in the secondary bay. Do this for the primary battery. If both work OK it suggests that the multi-purpose slot works (at least for the batteries).

Failing this contact Sony for support. You will find the number on VAIO-Link. under Contacts. You can try eSupport as well, but it may take time for a response.
