I've got a PCV 502 Desktop, but I can't find any info regarding the make/model of the Motherboard...does anyone know?

Unless someone knows better:smileygrin: , I have never seen references to makes and models of motherboards.

I am sure if its broken Sony will fix it, but they do not tend to be generic motherboards and I assume Sony either manufacture the boards themselves or have them made to their own Sony design.

If you wanted to upgrade the CPU, the chipset should be the key to determining max processor speed.

I am not even sure a generic ATX motherboard would fit and then their would be problems with hooking up all the lights etc as no doubt the Sony plug for all this will be in one block.

They are made by ASUS but we are not told what make/model or anything, and ASUS can't help either.

Thanks for the info guys...I find it a bit strange that we don't know what the model is...I mean how do you update the board, know what processor you can add...etc

In my opinion slotting in a new board ain't going to be very easy, ie layout connectors etc.

Regarding processor updates you need to identify CPU socket & the chipset on the board. For instance if its Intel you can trot off to the Intel site and look at the specs of the chipset. This should enable you to find out the max supported processor speed.

If you wanted total upgradeability you would have been better with a generic plastic box with generic parts but then again you would probably find that the only original bit left in two years time would be the plastic box.

VAIO PCs aint really made for upgrades - they're made for people who want a desktop and won't be updating the hardwrae often or at all. If you want to do that sort of thing build it yourself.

Nothing is cheap but I have never seen computers cheaper (comparitively).

If its old and you can pick up a faster processor cheap on Ebay to give your computer a bit more life - Fine.

I personally see little point in major upgrades with the prices of base units what they are now.

To me the only exotic bits are the very leading edge CPU's and graphics cards which are always going to cost an arm & a leg.

And believe it or not I used to be the world leader in PC upgrades. I must have wasted a bloody fortune just to play the latest games.

Some graphics cards cost > £500 and CPUs on day one cost around £400!

i ve got the result for the mobo, but can someone tell i there's some update for the AMI bios, coz i dont find them.

And is there secret settings in the bios ( an advanced mode ) coz there's very few settings, and i want some more ( AGP aperture size, and other chipset settings...)

Nope all going to end up in tears sony have locked out the advanced bios setting so no chance, and no there is no bios updates currently available tried ami web site sent them email which they replied saying bios version is latest.... boo hoo

I wish I had known about all this before buying it...I mean I could have got a slightly better spec machine for the same price...so if we pay a premium for the machine and then you can't upgrade it or change BIOS settings...then what's the point to buying a Sony...don't think I'll bother with these again...I feel like I've been done.

I still believe their desktops are not the best around, although the RA is very impressive imho.
