Battery Level after Hibernate - 50%??

Hi Guys,

I have recently just purchased a new Sony Vaio e-series and this is my third Vaio.

I know about batteries, about how you need to charge them, run them down, and then re-charge them and try not to leave the laptop plugged in at all times.

The problem I am having is that I tend to use the laptop in the evening. I would charge it fully, pull the plug out and put the laptop on hibernation over night (not standby).

The next evening I would turn the laptop back on, without it plugged in and the battery would show 55% charged.

The question is this normal? for a laptop to lose 45% battery power in 15 hours when on Hibernate.

I have just come across thousands of threads with the same problem with Sony Laptops (Battery Drain) on other forums.

How can Sony get away with this?

I thought a laptop was supposed to be mobile!

Hi cnagra.

There have been several threads here on this issue and even more on notebookreview.com. There appears to be no solution although some users report that the problem goes away after a clean install.

I suggest you let Vaio Support know the results of your tests. Every time we raise this subject with Sony they say it is not a big issue as they receive very few phone calls about it.

Sony will not response this issue. My laptop FW31J lose power from 50% to 10% after completely switched off when laptop just two weeks old. They ignore it.

When I have correctly understood you charge the battery, plug the mains plug and hibernate it on battery power, leave it with the battery inserted and power it up again on battery. So it could be expected that there is some consumption due to shut-down and start-up processes.
Also the newer VAIO's have a battery care function that allows to reduce the maximum loading (should extend the battery life). Did you check that your setting is not at max. 80% or similar?
Before calling the support I would do some tests in different configurations and see where you get.

Sony released various updates a few days ago, 1 of these was for bluetooth drivers...

Since then, after 12 hours I have been on 100% battery level.. I will keep an eye on this but hopefully it has fixed the problem.

Be interesting to see if this fixes other people's vaios.

I bought a Sony F11M1E laptop PC last June.  I use Hibernate quite a lot, to avoid having to shut everything down each night, and I inadvertently left it in Hibernate mode when I went away for a few days, instead of shutting down.  When I got back, the battery was flat as a pancake.  And when I put the charger on, I found the machine was unbootable.  The recovery disks would not recover it -  it just hung at the wallpaper screen, and the same was true of the inbuilt recovery (F10 during boot).  Fortunately I found a CD-only operating system (Knoppix) which provided me a Windows-like environment in which to offload my files from the hard disk to a USB drive, before I sent the laptop PC back to Sony, who changed the disk, thereby wiping my data off.  It is alarming that Sony provide nothing reliable to recover your files when you cannot boot the machine.  Clearly the recovery procedures needed to use software or data that was broken on the hard drive.  In contrast Knoppix is independent.

It is clear the machine is using up battery when in Hibernate mode, and there is evidence of this in other forums on the Web.  I have never had this problem with my other (HP and Dell) machines.  Hibernate mode is not supposed to use up any battery at all.

I have seen it stated elsewhere that the remedy is either to switch off the mains power unit before hibernating, or to take out the battery briefly afterwards if you have hibernated with power on (to kill any software still running?).  Thus seems ludicrous.  I have yet to try these workarounds, so cannot say if they work.

Sony Battery Care (which aims to extend batery life by preventing charging above 80%) is also implicated in some discussions I have read.  This would seem to make sense, because if you accidentally leave your machine plugged in after you hibernate it, presumably some software has to be active to stop the charging when battery level reaches 80%.

Is there a fix?
