Hard disk space

I just bought a VAIO fz11e. It's a fantastic notebook, the only problem is that there's less than 80 Gigabite free space, while there should be 120. I cannot imagine that Windows Vista takes up 40 gig, and all installed programs together account for 5 gig. Does anyone know if this is normal?

Welcome to ClubVAIO

This is completely normal as the recovery partition (used for system recovery) and this takes up 7.5GB (according to sony although on my machine its nearer 9GB). The windows folder is another 9.5GB so it all adds up.

The hard drive size reported in My Computer on your Vaio will be different to the advertised 120GB this is due to the different way manufactures and Microsoft report the sizes..

Manufacturers use the SI scale for example 1KB = 1000 bytes

Microsoft, ie windows Vista, use binary, for example 1KB = 1024 bytes

Therefore manufactures 1200 GB hard drive = 120,000,000,000 bytes.

Whereas MS 120 GB hard drive = 112 GB

example 120GB manufactures size converted to MS binary scale...

120Gb = 120,000,000,000

/1024 = 117187500 kilobytes
/1024 = 114441 megabytes
/1024 = 112 Gigabytes

Also you have a hidden recovery partition, which is probably 7.6 GB, once this is subtracted your down to just over 104 GB

The difference from 104 GB to just under 80GB would be down to Vista installation and the Sony pre-installed applications, etc..

Your welcome

Dell use 80GB hard drives as standard so you are lucky that you have 120GB!

Hi everyone
First of all, sorry for my English as it is not my native language
I have just bought Sony Vaio FZ21M. After finding a lot of software that I do not need to use I decided to uninstall it. Suprisingly, after removing a lot of programs free disk space has fallen from 150 GBs to 145GBs!! Can anyone xplain this phenomena?
Thank You for Your help
