2015 Bravia Android TV Issues

I thought I'd create a generic thread to cover off the issues being encountered on the 2015 Bravia Android TVs. I've listed my issues below with fixes / workarounds and responses from support. All comments and solutions welcome!

1) Hot Swap HDMI doesn't work - manifested by no input on HDMI channels 2, 3 and 4 on the KD-49X8305C. Workaround - reset the TV, either by holding down the remote power button for 5 seconds or by switching the TV off at the wall and then back on again. Further details on this thread: https://community.sony.co.uk/t5/televisions/kd-49x8305c-hdmi-2-3-4-inputs-not-working/td-p/1944435

2) HDD Recording doesn't work - error message states a system update is required but none is available when checking. Hopefully this will be fixed soon by a firmware update.

3) Netflix App doesn't work - this seems like the app has been deliberately disabled. So far a support case has only recommended that a factory reset be performed (took two days to get to that cracking piece of advice.....), with no improvement as a result. A temporary (albeit for advanced users only) workaround is provided by MikeLothian on this thread - https://community.sony.co.uk/t5/televisions/netflix-support-for-kd55x8509c-android-tv/td-p/1945360

4) Sound lag and performance issues after the TV (KD-49X8305C) has been on standby for a while - manifested for me as stuttering and sound / picture sync issues in all apps (youtube, amazon instant video etc) and HDMI sources (PS4, seperate YouView box etc). Hopefully this will be fixed in a firmware update, at the moment workarounds involve either changing channels to get the sync to work or in my case having to turn the TV off and then on again at the socket.

As stated previously, all comments welcome. Personally I'm willing to give Sony a couple of weeks to fix this, but if it's not done soon I'll be sending my new TV back for a refund as it's not really fit for purpose.

@malcolm1962 yeah I got that email AFTER i had returned it.

It does seem that you need to get the right person in that team responding to your complaint.

I have always bought Sony since my first radio back in the late 60's. Sony have come up with some howlers in the past like their Elcaset (look it up on wikipedia) and their Betamax video system but even though they didn't catch on they were always technically excellent and performed well. Over the years I have bought many Sony products, Amplifiers Cassette Decks, Tuners, VHS Recorders, Minidisc Players, Walkmans, Microphones, Plus hundreds of Tapes and Discs just to name a few. I am currently using A Sony AV amp HDD recorder CD player and Blu Ray Player and even a Sony Phone. All have consistently performed to a high standard and never advertised a function which wasn't included from the off. Would I buy Sony again, well that depends? I shall study reviews very carefully before making that decision, as this fiasco has dented my trust in what should still be a a reputable comapany.

Sony your silence on this matter has now reached an unacceptable point. If not on this forum you need to make a statement somehwere. Saying there are technical difficulties is not good enough You invented the CD for heavens sake, designing these TVs should have been a piece of cake.

Actually...  They're only just ceasing the manufacture of Betamax Cassettes!

And I'm sitting not a foot away from one of these - http://betacam.palsite.com/pvw2800ovi.shtml - which still works (almost) perfectly.  We also have their GD-HD700 HDV player, about 1/2 dozen PVM series monitors, F1 and Z1 cameras...  Mini disc players... There is even to my certain knowledge on of their 'Quadraphonic' 1/4 reel to reel recorders in the storage room!  - All these things work; absolutely rock-solid.  We must have dozens of Sony items!

I felt a bit 'stung' a few years back when a BD player I had from them proved temperamental and eventually failed after less than 2 years...   But as all I require are fairly basic TV functions I thought this couldn't go too far wrong...

Clearly they're just another company of bean-counters and fairground barkers trash-trading on a once-great reputation; modern times! - Pity.

Sadly no more Sony for me ever, simple as that, they dont deserve my custom anymore.

I will also let others know not to buy from this company too, word spread quickly Sony and my, I will make sure its starts to get faster.

All I wanted was a TV that worked, I cant even get that from you!

Sony you have let me down and countless others too, its a good job i am not French as they would turn up outside your buildings and burn sheep in protest, shame the British are too polite, this has to change or we will always get treated like this!

@manuelsal - "Caould you be so gentle to explain me what is lip sync? Isn't it the sync between audio and video?"

Yes. Exactly that. I see it on HD TV, Netflix, and on YouTube on my Sony. If I watch exactly the same show on our Samsung TV there is no problem.

@MrLizard - "If Sony can just fix lipsync, I'll be able to step away from this thread once and for all :-)."

I'm with you there.

Pity we live at opposite ends of the country. We could have a real nostalgia trip together surrounded by this kit. I still have a 2 Channel reel to reel in the loft. I also have several Columbia SQ Quadraphonic vinyl albums I bought in anticipation of buying a Sony SQ Amp and decoder. I subequent;y found the "Hafler" method was almost as good albeit just a single rear channel but it worked well with Quad albums. Never bought the amp as Quad died out and they were just a bit too expensive for me at the time. However, it demonstrate how Sony were always at the cutting edge of technological innovation with aspirational products. The Picture on my TV is stunning, sadly the UI/OS doesn't match up. I just hope going for Samsung will not be a retrograde step, these are expensive gambles.

Which is the cart and which is the horse?  Very possibly Sony's profits are being hit by the fact they now seem to be in the business of building sub-standard garbage but selling it at a premium price!  - Clearly the work of bean-counters...

No instruction manual exists for these sets, the UI is garbage, the basic features don't work properly, the advanced features are a complete mess, there is no credible support - Sony have even left the running of this forum to unfortunate volunteers that they seem to have conned into working as unpaid moderators/support staff...

It's not how you run a good-quality brand!  - Sony... Go figure! As they will insist on saying in the 'States!

Yes, I know what you are saying - that's why I said 'invent' and not 'recover' 🙂

And I wasn't claiming any more detail for HD Ready sets showing a DVD - merely observing that even at that low level of screen resolution, pixels need to be filled in to make up the difference between a frame from the DVD and a frame on the TV,

.

I'm very surprised, and pleased, though, that my DVD collection is far from unwatchable on the Sony. I have to be watching very critically to notice the difference even on a good reference disc like Koyaanisqatsi, where I have both the remastered DVD and the BluRay, though the differences are there to see.

Just round the corner from the quayside in Nyhaven, as shown in that Sony video, if I don't miss my guess, is the Hans Christian Andersen shop, where you can have your photo taken with a life size dummy of him.

i can just imagine telling him that we have this 'ENSOC' model of TV from Sony, and him then asking "OK, so which of us is the dummy now?'

Hi Caledonian_TV,

Just want to follow-up on the following quote:

If Sony have somehow manipulated a mentally-ill individual into stewarding a forum on their behalf, and doing so for nothing, then that is all the more despicable and dishonourable of them as a company!

The Sony Community has many passionate and committed users.
