3.5 mm line out

Brand new Xperia E

So i can plug in a variety of earphones and the sound comes out of the headphones, even a mono one with a mono 3.5mm jack

BUT

when i plug in a 3.5mm stereo jack to plug my phone into my car, the audio continues to come out of the phone's speaker

So in summary.

If you want to use an Xperia E as music player into a car or a mixing desk etc you might have problems with the output device not being recognised by the phone....

😞

my solution to hear my phone over my car's aduio system is as follows

I bought a 3.5mm jack to 2x 3.5mm socket splitter.

I can plug that into the phone and the phone keeps playing on the speaker

I can plug a 3.5mm line in lead into one of the two sockets and the phone keeps playing on the speaker even if i plug the other end of the 3.5mm lead into the car

As soon as i plug a pair of small cheap headphones into the other socket on the splitter, the phone senses them and swaps it's audio output to the external devices - and in this case the audio comes out of the car.

In actuality the splitter plug is plugged into the car's audio in socket, and in 1 of the two sockets i plug in a set of ear phones that are cable tied up so they don't roll around. I then use the 3.5mm - 3.5mm jack lead to connect that to the phone.

Johan,

Appreciate your answer and interest on this thread.

I've had the Xperia E dual for almost half a year, and this product is so not Sony:

- Sony excels with its cameras.  Xperia E's though is fixed-focus and cannot even read HR codes, not to say of poor picture quality.

- Then this issue with audio ouput.

- Phone's memory as well as internal storage are rather limited.  However, from the Settings -> Apps menu, I'm not able to move downloaded apps (at least those which allow the option) to the external SD card, which has ample wasted space.  I can only move them to the internal storage.  Or is there any way to move apps to the external SD card?

- And finally, my device has not picked up the JB update as of yet, even if it was rolled out in May.  I'm not sure though I want JB after reading several comments similar to:

Got the new 4.1.1 on my Xperia E dual - it's more laggy than 4.0.4. Today I'm going back to 4.0.4. I see no reason yet for going to 4.1.1.

Appreciate your comments on above.

Thanks again for your interest and patience.

dear johan,

I am deepak from india and i want sony to replace my phone bcoz of this problem would u be able to help me to get it done or should i go with a legal procedure. I cant expect from a company like sony to do such a silly mistake. Now if this has been done unfortunately also sony should take the responsibility and fix this problem in future as well as existing units.

Regards,

Deepak

I really find it hard to accept this as an answer. I've had a variety of phones over the years, and this is the only one that has ever suffered this problem. Hardware limitation? - I mean, come on, it's 2013 for goodness sake, it's almost embarassing.

The problem is that the earplug connector do not use the lifting contact. Internalie it has an pullup resistor which apply an voltage to the earplugs. the earplugs have an resistans of 32 ohm and nearly shorten the voltage.

If you connect an 33 ohm resistor from left to ground and another resistor from right to ground it will work.

It works, I have done it, for everyone else, a 2x3,5 and earplugs is easiest.

Perhaps Sony could make an menu who ignore the hardware selction of output.

I also have an problem with Bluetooth, I have an Bluetooth headset but not using it so often (use earplugs) but the phone turns on bluetooth once a week or so. I have to unparing the Bluetooth.
